We are proud to announce that we have been nominated for the prestigious Earthshot Prize 2024. The Earthshot Prize, founded by Prince William and The Royal Foundation, seeks to identify and reward innovative solutions that address the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. Herdade da Matinha’s nomination in the Protecting and Restoring Nature category is an important validation of our commitment to advancing reforestation and biodiversity conservation at Herdade da Matinha, on the Alentejo coast, as a model to scale up and replicate in other territories.
Our work, based on the reforestation of native species and biodiversity conservation practices, has proven to be a viable solution for expanding and accelerating habitat rehabilitation, biodiversity conservation and forest regeneration for a more resilient ecosystem in the face of climate change.
About Matinha Re-Gen
Matinha Re-Gen is a reforestation and biodiversity conservation program that began in 1995 as a mission to restore natural habitats and ecosystems at Herdade da Matinha. Our Ecosystem Management Plan has the following objectives: a) Promote functional biodiversity; b) Improving the interconnection between green infrastructures, enhancing them and reducing ecological risk; and c) Promote ecosystem services in the specific context of the territory.
Now, after 28 years of daily dedication and resilience, we have 107 hectares of land that have become a thriving Nature Sanctuary.
About the Earthshot Prize
Launched in 2020 by His Royal Highness Prince William and The Royal Foundation, the Earthshot Prize is an ambitious global environmental prize designed to discover, celebrate and scale the best solutions to help repair our planet. The Earthshot Prize will award one million pounds to each of the five annual winners whose solutions make the most progress towards the five Earthshot categories.
For 2024, a total of 2,429 potentially revolutionary solutions, based in 139 countries around the world, were presented by a network of more than 430 Official Nominators. The nominations will be subject to detailed evaluation, culminating in the final selection by Prince William and the Earthshot Prize Council. The winners will be announced at the fourth annual awards ceremony in Cape Town in November 2024.
